Africa the NOT Country and a Chat on Bravery
What is Africa like? I am not sure. I can only tell you what Botswana is like. Africa is a HUGE continent with over 50 countries, hundreds of languages and all with their different problems and histories. Many cultures are similar within the same region but the culture in southern Africa is vastly different from that of say West Africa. In Botswana there are at least 5 languages spoken in different regions. Setswana and English are the main ones though. If there was one thing I wanted people in America to know about Africa is that AFRICA IS NOT A COUNTRY. Just like North America is not a country neither is Africa. Imagine how offended Americans would be if they found out people in other parts of the world were grouping America with Canada and Mexico and saying, “Oh they all have the same culture. It is all the same because they are in North America.”
It is very easy to categorize Africans into a neat pile of characteristics, habits and life styles. I know, I even catch myself doing it sometimes. Like in Latin America there are many qualities that different African cultures share. This isn’t to say that they all believe in the same things however. I guess what I am trying to say is that like Americans share qualities with the British, that does not make us British, right? And people should not have the right to assume that because we speak English and share similar life styles with the British that we are also the same people, right? This is the same case in the continent of Africa. Please always remember that diversity exists everywhere, not just in America. It is even more infuriating when people in America refuse to believe that the dangers and conflicts of one African country will not be a part of another African country. As Americans we are very behind on geography but trust me when I tell you the Boko Haram is not going to get me in Botswana and I am incredibly far from any of the countries experiencing Ebola outbreaks. Stop saying Africa is dangerous because though there are major conflicts in SOME countries of Africa it is not the same for all of them. In fact, I feel safer in Botswana than I did in America and I mean that with absolutely no exaggeration.
Let’s talk about bravery for a bit. I pride myself in being a brave person. People are always telling me how brave I am and that makes me feel like I have high standards to live up to. This is fine as I like to take up that challenge. I am constantly trying to overcome small fears that keep me from being a better person. Examples being public speaking, asking for help and trying things out of my comfort zone, hence Peace Corps right? Getting on a plane with 70 other strangers to a strange land for two years for a job you have a tiny description for, brave right? But also willing to open up to new ideas and experiences. But honestly I think that people who overcomes the little things everyday and actually become comfortable doing those small things they once feared or were embarrassed to do before become more and more brave everyday! A person who learns to speak in front of hundreds of people on a controversial topic that no one wants to talk about is a damn brave person! Overcoming embarrassment is also a form of bravery. A person may be so shy that they cannot voice their opinion or they cannot ride a bike in front of people or they cannot interact with animals without being awkward (guilty of this one) but if they can overcome those embarrassments then they are on the path to making life easier for themselves and having overcome that embarrassment/fear they have become a little bit more brave.
In attempt to not make this blog too long I’ll stop here. Let me just leave you with a thought I have had in the last few weeks after my latest vacation and some conversations I have had with people. Bravery, I have come to realize, is all in your willingness to open up to new ideas. People often tell me that I am brave. However, it is still perplexing to me how some things that make people say this are things that I do not think people should be so afraid of. Take bungee jumping for example. Some people have a fear of heights. Okay. But those that don’t and are still afraid, what of them? “I don’t want to die,” they say. Well you are more likely to die in car accident and you get in a car almost every day. Fear should not stop us from doing things we love or bring us great joy. We are only here for a short time and we should be getting the most out of it. I am not saying go become a daredevil and jump off the highest bridge you find for fun! I am merely saying that irrational fear should be something that we are constantly trying to overcome to lead happier lives, from our smallest actions to our biggest. With a little bit of rationality and optimism, by god, you can be fearless.
