Self Exploration, huh?
Self Exploration, huh?
Jan 10th
I am feeling very optimistic today. Earlier, as in like 10 minutes ago, I had sort of an epiphany. Peace Corps volunteers always talk about this finding themselves stuff that I never really understood. I mean I still don’t to be quite frank, but I think I may have started to understand it? To me I guees it means just learning things about yourself you didn’t know or in my case today remembering things about yourself you had forgotten. As I sat here lecturing my friend in America about how she can’t just up and leave the country with her student debt in limbo and with not a dime in her savings account I sort of had one of those moments were people realized they have turned into their parents as hard as they had tried not to. Eish! Talk about a nightmare right! WRONG. My parents are the most responsible and good people I know. I would love to be just like them one day and I already see so many of their qualities in me. However, there is one thing my parents and I never saw eye to eye on… and that my friends is what this afternoon a beautiful, wild soul I call my friend helped me remember. We only have one life and we should LIVE it. I have to be cliché but we must live life to the fullest. Sometimes enjoying the little things are more important than staying in and saving money. Sometimes taking the lower paying job is important if it is more enjoyable than the higher paying one. It was like the independent, naïve and optimist teen from the past made a quick come back to partner up with adult me who now knows there is a happy medium. I am more than willing to take this balancing act on as my life endeavor because in the end all us humans are looking for one thing: happiness.
Friendly reminder that these views and opinions are mine and not that of Peace Corps etc etc…

Me siento my optimista hoy. Eish! Que terror verdad!? NO. Ninguno.

I have been in Botswana for almost five months. If that does not blow your guys minds it does mine! It seems like I only been here a couple weeks. The days of PST and homestay seem so long ago in the past though time is such a weird thing here. Days drag and weeks fly. I spent thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years with some amazing people and had such great fun that I am certain after Peace Corps I will continue to call these people great friends. In my village things are as sleepy and slow as ever but within my tiny little house and heart I feel things changing.
I am a very shy person. Not like some of my PCV friends who just go out and make friends with anyone in their path. I blame my parents for inheriting their shyness. It is hard to make strong connections with people who’s English is their second language and who are just as shy, if not more, than you are. Since I arrived in Moletemane 11 weeks ago there has been a lot of me hiding in my house. Because my land lady/land mom is a respected older woman in the community children do not come to my door everyday wanting to play like they do to other volunteers. I can’t say that I am upset by this because I don’t think I could handle village children in my tiny house everyday. They are all terrified of me anyway.
Lately I have come to think that my integration is not going well. I have really struggled to really DO Peace Corps and integrate with the community. I use my weekends for me time. I normally don’t leave my house except to use the god-awful pit latrine and to get water from my standpipe. Also for the occasional trip to Selebi Phikwe for groceries. This isn’t what a Peace Corps volunteer is supposed to be like. I think I know the village centre of my shopping village better than my own village and I don‘t even go there every weekend! But it is hard when you do not have anyone to hang out with or ask you to do things. People do not really take random walks here (a good sunburn will teach you that) and there isn’t really anywhere to walk to anyway. Let’s face it. I am making a boat load of excuses. I know this. That is why I am trying. I am trying to let go of everything that holds me down. I am trying to let go of being bashful and embarrassed of asking questions. I am trying to just let go in general. I need to be confident and if not at least pretend to be. Uptight Vanessa needs to unwind, STAT.
I came here to do Peace Corps and that’s what I need to do. I need to become a part of the community and do things the community do. Sometimes I get a little down because I think to myself how un-integrated I am but then I think, no. it’s not that bad. I have adapted to things that would make other people would tap out on the first day. I do many things everyday that everyone else in my village does to that people back home do not. Some examples….
The Dreaded Pit Latrine…
Ya, I have a toilet…it is on the other side of my compound. It is a small cement structure with a zinc roof and a wooden door, much like my house. There is a lovely tree right outside that smells like perfume. Strategically placed there of course for when the door is opened it no longer smells of perfume. The inside has a cement shelf were there is a hole that leads down to the ground. That my friends is where nature is called in. Enough with the graphics, lets talk about other things surrounding the latrine. I have to carry my toilet paper on the way to the toilet. Because it is in the back of my compound there is a small foot path that people walk on that passes right by it. Nothing like saying good morning to five people while going in and out of the hole of death. Okay, okay. It’s not that bad. I mean if lizards and quarter sized roaches can live in there it cannot be THAT bad right??
It’s a Trap…
Today, and the two days before that, I was locked in my house. My door expands when it rains and then it will not shut. Well after being forced shut and opened so many times the handle has broken, therefore if it rains in the night and the door expands I cannot pull it open in the morning. I have to struggle with it for a moment and hope my land mom is nearby to hear me struggle and come and open it from the outside. This morning she went to a funeral. I hung out in my house for awhile until she got back.
A Shoe Box
I know I have mentioned before how small my house is but I don’t feel like I have accurately expressed how small it actually is. I have two rooms. The one upon first entering the house is the kitchen. On the right hand side are cabinets then stove then small table, then wall. Upon entering to the left is the door to my room then small kitchen table with three chairs, then refrigerator then wall. There’s about 3 feet wide of walking distance in the middle. Straight ahead there is a window. Upon entering my room there is a small bookshelf that takes up the left wall then a dresser then a stand up fan that does not work then a full length mirror. There is a window above the dresser. That corner of the room starts the loveseat in my room. On the left side of the room when entering is my bed, then a wardrobe. There a small gap before hitting the wall where I keep my suitcases. The loveseat takes up most of the back wall. There you have it. That is the entirety of my house. I’ve described the pit latrine of course.
A broom is a girl’s best friend…
So my house is slowly falling apart! Psh no biggie. I don’t mind sweeping out the pieces of cement in the morning, or the dozens of bugs for that matter. I have my handy, dandy Doom spray for the extermination of bugs. If mosquito nets weren’t a thing we could find here I would have gone home long ago. There is no way I could sleep fighting off all the bugs that I find dead the next morning on my floor.
Water for the Long Haul…
Think about all the things you use water for every, single day. Now imagine having to haul all that water into your house with buckets from your yard. Wild right? Water for washing dishes, water for bathing, water for the water filter, water for washing clothes. Speaking of water for washing clothes…I managed to spill an entire bucket of water all over my floor this past week. There only happened to be an extension cord on the floor with my only precious working fan, my laptop, and my cell phone charger all plugged in. I hastily picked up the cords and hung them on a hook. Did I mention my one and only fear is electricity and being electrocuted??? Luckily nothing was damaged… except for my pride. Oh and I shut the power off in my house. Oops. There is no way I can wash clothes outside because 1.) I am not doing it in in the blazing sun 2.) going off that, I am not getting up any earlier than I already do to avoid the sun. Sleeping in for me these days means about 8:30 am. 3.) I don’t want all of Moletemane watching me do my laundry.
This past month brought a lot of heart break. None of which I had imagined. For many reasons. Yes, the holidays were hard but not even half as hard as I thought they would be. No, this month was hard because I saw a fellow Peace Corps volunteer leave. One that I never thought would leave that I was very close with. It was almost like a mourning stage I went through. Part of me was angry and bitter and felt like she was letting us down but the stronger part of me said she needed to do what was best for it and I need to learn to let go.
This is the season for change and new beginnings here in Peace Corps Botswana. IST is this month. After that I will start projects and also get to see all those beloved PCV’s of mine at IST and after. I will actually start doing everything I came here to do. So when I think about all these above mentioned things that I do on a regular basis I think to myself, yes, I am def doing Peace Corps. They stress over and over how everyone’s experience will be different. This one is mine and I’m going to own it.
Friendly reminder these are my views and don't respresent Peace Corps views etc etc

No hubo problema.
